SVLG, Federal Education and Health Officials to Address Pandemic-Related Youth Mental Health Challenges at Dec. 2 Education Summit — SVLG’s ‘Hire Learning’ Summit to Also Feature Important Announcement on Silicon Valley Career Pathways for HBCU Students and Graduates

SAN JOSÉ, CA (December 1, 2021) — Federal officials from the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services will join an important conversation around mental health challenges among the nation’s youth stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The conversation comes on the heels of a recent report issued by SVLG examining how Bay Area schools are addressing the underlying stressors and concerns facing local youth during the pandemic. The summit will also include an important announcement around establishing new career pathways between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Silicon Valley’s innovation ecosystem.

In September 2021, SVLG released a report entitled Staying in the Moment: How Schools are Supporting Mental Health as Students Return to In-Person Learning. In the report, SVLG identified recommendations by clinical mental health experts and showcased key actions that Bay Area schools have taken to date to address the underlying stressors and concerns facing local youth. In October 2021, the U.S. Department of Education published a report that echoed similar findings at the national level.

“Our Hire Learning Summit will convene regional and national leaders in education and talent development to discuss solutions to enhance the competitiveness of our innovation infrastructure and diverse STEM pipelines. The impressive slate of speakers from the public and private sectors will also address timely pandemic-related topics including youth mental health and the workforce implications of the ‘Great Resignation,’” said Ahmad Thomas, CEO of SVLG. “I’m particularly excited about our important upcoming announcement around establishing career pathways between our leading Silicon Valley companies and HBCUs.

The SVLG summit—sponsored by Blue Shield of California—will convene business leaders, top Biden-Harris administration officials and educators from across the country to address questions around how to best support and prepare all Americans for 21st century jobs.
