Sustainable Growth

Sustainable Growth

The Sustainable Growth Center of Expertise (COE) is working to make Silicon Valley a sustainable and livable place for all by continuing SVLG’s leadership on transportation and mobility, the housing affordability crisis, and climate mitigation strategies while supporting CA’s transition to a reliable and affordable clean energy future.

In Focus

Working groups and task forces of the Sustainable Growth Center of Expertise:

The Working Group supports several of the Sustainable Growth CoE’s major policy priorities, including the creation of a Western Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) that partners with regional clean energy markets, lower costs for everyday consumers, and accelerates regional power grid transmission across Western states. Additionally, the task force will support state and federal legislation that accelerates the adoption of critical clean infrastructure projects and streamlines traditional permitting processes.

The Task Force supports policies and programs that speed the transition to an electrified transportation sector through the adoption of zero-emissions vehicles. The task force will also promote policies and legislation that foster climate innovation, attract capital investments, and position Silicon Valley as a global leader in clean transportation.

The Task Force aligns our advocacy on environmental and clean energy investments in a potential 2024 statewide Climate Bond ballot measure, to promote Bay Area climate resilience and sustainability. The task force will also explore private sector opportunities for sustainable financing.

Sustainable Growth supports statewide policies to accelerate the pace of housing development and support Silicon Valley’s competitive edge by bringing down housing costs for everyone in the region. This COE also considers local housing projects for endorsement, prioritizing developments that are mixed-use, close to high-quality public transit, and that include affordably-priced units.

A bill by Senator Dave Cortese, which seeks to meet the rapid demand for data centers from individuals, organizations, and industries in California, cleared its first policy committee on Tuesday. The Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee today advanced SB 1298, which would streamline the approval process for data centers and maintain clear guidelines for development, all while upholding California’s robust environmental standards and creating thousands of new construction jobs across the state.
SVLG CEO Ahmad Thomas today applauded the White House, which today announced plans to invest over $5 billion in semiconductor-related research, development, and workforce needs, to advance President Biden’s goals of driving R&D in the United States through the CHIPS for America program.
