Statement from SVLG Honoring the Life and Legacy of the Late Rod Diridon, Sr.
SVLG today issued a statement honoring the life and legacy of one of our region’s most cherished civic leaders, Rod Diridon, Sr.
For nearly 50 years, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group has worked alongside our member companies to shape a vision of the region as the seat of the Innovation Economy. Through engagement on policy, legislation, and initiatives at the local, state and national level, we’re building on our legacy of success to build a better region for businesses, workers, and the community. Our Housing, Health & Transportation Policy Team has achieved significant improvements in everything from access to telehealth services to advocating for thousands of homes to be built for workers to bringing airlines from Asia to San Jose. We have championed transportation measures over the years, securing funding for transit improvements, congestion relief, and more. The Leadership Group has been actively involved in BART expansion, and recently celebrated the opening of new stations. In 2020, we led a measure across three Bay Area counties that saved Caltrain. We will continue to use our influence, experience and combined voice to emphasize the importance of these issues moving in the future.
In partnership with our member companies, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group organized the Silicon Valley COVID-19 Aid Coalition – a comprehensive, coordinated response to procure the medical supplies and equipment needed by our public, private, and nonprofit hospitals and clinics to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, the Aid Coalition has raised $8,562,550 in monetary and in-kind donations from our member companies and individuals. The Aid Coalition has been able to also initiate long-lasting change by creating a set of product specification sheets for the most urgently needed PPE. Hospitals and clinics across the county, state and the nation can utilize these sheets to identify incoming PPE donations.
SVLG led the effort to pass Measure RR, a three-county ballot item that will raise an estimated $3 billion over 30 years to support and expand Caltrain, the most successful commuter rail service in the country. The measure passed with 70% of the vote, preserving a vital part of our public transportation.
SVLG co-sponsored SB 288 by Senator Scott Wiener. The legislation exempts transit, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects from CEQA requirements in order to accelerate construction and provide jobs during unprecedented times and economic uncertainty while moving California towards ambitious climate change targets. Already, municipalities have been able to capitalize, with the City and County of San Francisco implementing over 20 miles of bus-only lanes. SB 288 was passed with the help of coalition partners at SPUR and the Bay Area Council.
Advocacy for More Homes The Leadership Group has advocated for over 300 home developments near transit and with affordability components over the past two decades, resulting in over 14,000 new homes in just the last two years.
SVLG supported AB 890 to align California with 28 other states to give nurse practitioners authority to order and interpret diagnostic procedures, certify disability, and prescribe, dispense, and administer controlled substances without physician oversight. This bill is an important step in lowering the cost of healthcare in the state.
The Leadership Group was an influential voice in establishing an Advisory Panel on Health Care Delivery Systems and Universal Coverage within the state budget- a critical step in crafting effective, sustainable policy that stabilizes the health care market and provides universal access to quality care.
We co-sponsored SB 828, which requires cities to better plan for needed housing. We saw the success of this effort with housing allocations more than doubling for the Bay Area. This will lead to a better housing balance so families can live near work and spend less time in their cars.
The Leadership Group supported AB 2923 - a successful effort to allow for high quality mixed use development on BART land near stations. This law is already creating mixed income housing so people can live closer to transit and work while contributing to the region’s economic vibrancy.
The Leadership Group was proud to support AB 744 from Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry to require reimbursement parity between a telehealth service “on the same basis and to the same extent” as an in-person health care visit. The Silicon Valley Leadership Group has a long history of supporting telehealth legislation because our top priority is increasing access to health care across our state, particularly for rural and underserved communities.
The Leadership Group helped to pass AB 1804, requiring the report of serious occupational injury, illness, or death to the division to be made immediately by telephone or through an online mechanism established by the division for that purpose, instead of by mail, as previously required.
The Leadership Group was a key business voice in support of a critical Medi-Cal provider reimbursement, advocating for a successful compromise resulting in allocation of up to $546 million from Prop. 56 Tobacco Tax revenue to safety net providers.
Supported eleven housing developments that will provide 6,543 new homes in eight cities. Adoption of North Bayshore Precise Plan by the Mountain View City Council allowing for 9,850 new housing homes in the area. Partnered with SV@Home, Greenbelt Alliance, and local coalition partners.
The Leadership Group led a successful campaign with 71% of voters approving Measure B, a ½ cent sales tax, 30 year tax to improve local transit. Funding priorities include
•$1.5 billion to extend BART from the Berryessa Station to East San Jose, Downtown San Jose, Diridon Station and Santa Clara University
•$1.5 billion for County Expressway and Highway Interchange improvements to reduce congestion and increase safety
•$1.2 billion for Local Streets and Road improvements and repair
•$1 billion for modernization, safety and service improvements needed for the future electrification of Caltrain;
•$500 million for transit operations, increasing bus frequency, creating first/last-mile connections and creating programs for low income residents and seniors
•$350 million for a transit corridor study of the State Route 85 Corridor, noise abatement, transit and congestion relief projects
•$250 million for bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
The Leadership Group works to improve the livability of the region on behalf of our member companies, their employees, and the communities in which we live, work and play.
• Advocate for local and state legislation that removes regulatory barriers and encourages housing development policies such as encouraging infill, upzoning, RHNA and CEQA reform.
• Engaging in local land use and planning, with a priority on transit corridors, fixed rail station areas, and member company expansion.
• FASTER Bay Area Transformative Transportation Measure to create a seamless, efficient, world-class local transit system
• Solutions for traffic reduction and clean air goals as our region recovers from the pandemic
• Increase access, improve outcomes and reduce cost through health care policy
• Support policies that destigmatize mental health conditions and improve access, treatment and outcomes of mental health services.
• Promote and protect policies and regulations that foster healthcare innovations
• Respond to member needs by hosting Town Halls with elected officials, roundtables to share best practices, and the creation of a Vaccination Distribution Working Group.
