SVLG CEO Ahmad Thomas Statement On Federal Decision to Award +$5 Billion of Funding for BART Silicon Valley Phase II Project

“We applaud the Federal Transit Administration’s decision to award over $5 billion in funding for the BART Silicon Valley Phase II Project. This historic commitment will enable our next phase of growth and infrastructure development to support our region’s dynamic economy.

The BART extension is a critical investment in our region’s innovation ecosystem, creating 75,000 jobs and significantly boosting our economic competitiveness. The federal government’s commitment of over $5 billion matches the extraordinary dedication shown by Santa Clara County residents, who have generated $4.6 billion in funding through local measures over the past two decades.

Additionally, this project will foster transit-oriented development and enhance connectivity throughout Silicon Valley and the greater Bay Area, ensuring that our region remains the beating heart of the innovation economy for decades to come. This funding decision represents a high ROI federal spend that will benefit all stakeholders, supporting affordable housing initiatives and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 19.5 tons each year.

We commend the leadership and determination of our regional elected officials and VTA staff for their advocacy. SVLG is proud to have played a crucial role in working alongside these officials and a coalition of regional business and community groups in securing this historic federal funding commitment in partnership with them. Our collective efforts, including ongoing communication with federal officials and mobilizing broad-based support from community leaders, have been instrumental in ensuring this significant investment in our region’s future.

However, there is still work to be done. While we are grateful for this significant federal investment, we had hoped to secure the full $6 billion requested to cover the remaining project costs.

SVLG remains committed to working closely with our coalition members, local leaders, and federal partners to ensure the success of this transformative project for our region.”
