What: U.S. Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, in conversation with Carl Guardino, CEO of Silicon Valley Leadership Group, will discuss current foreign policy challenges and issues of economic security.

U.S. Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo was sworn in on April 26, 2018. He previously served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency from January 2017 to April 2018.  Mr. Pompeo graduated first in his class at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986 and served as a cavalry officer patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. He also served with the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the U.S. Army’s Fourth Infantry Division. After leaving active duty, Secretary Pompeo graduated from Harvard Law School, having been an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Carl Guardino is Past Chair of, and serving his fourth consecutive term on, the California Transportation Commission and is President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a public policy trade association that represents more than 340 Silicon Valley companies. His transportation leadership includes management of ballot Measures A and B that funded nineteen key road and rail improvements, and co-managed a traffic relief initiative that would generate $7.5 billion in local funds. Guardino also led a three-year effort that would generate an additional $6.5 billion in local funds for traffic relief improvements. In 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger nominated Guardino to a four-year term on the California Transportation Commission and has been reappointed twice by Governor Jerry Brown. In 2000, the San Jose Mercury News recognized Guardino as one of the “Five Most Powerful” people in Silicon Valley, in a once-per-decade “Power Study”. He received a B.A. in Political Science from San Jose State University, where he is a Distinguished Alumnus.
