Education & Workforce

About

The Education & Workforce Portfolio promotes and champions high-quality education in our region to develop a strong, diverse, local workforce that is able to succeed in the innovation economy. Working through cross-sector partnerships, programs, and policy advocacy, we have been successful in moving education forward at the regional and state level. Membership on this policy committee is comprised of companies and colleges that have a vested interest in developing and supporting California’s public education system.

Legislative Priorities

We have three current areas of focus. Our number one priority is to diversify the STEM pipeline. We advocate for policy and programs that diversify the STEM pipeline by encouraging the availability of technical education and other opportunities for underrepresented communities. We are working, as we have for many years, to improve the quality of public education K-12, in order to have a consistent, diverse pool of local talent available for hiring in the future. And we guide regional and state-wide efforts to expand access to higher education and strengthen education-industry partnerships.

Since 2018, our Community College to Career program, now called Hire Learning, has worked with Leadership Group member companies, Silicon Valley community colleges, and partner nonprofits to provide over 2,000 work-based learning, career exposure, and hiring opportunities to community college students. In 2020, we began advising community colleges in 10 states to expand, start, and improve internships and job placements for students of color and women with satellite offices for our members.
