SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 25, 2023) — The Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) – the leading business association representing the innovation economy and its ecosystem – today announced a new working group co-chaired by member companies Google and Johnson & Johnson focused on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) by the technology industry.

The Working Group on Responsible AI will bring member companies together to develop resources to educate and inform the industry, public, and policymakers about the role of AI and how it is helping improve people’s lives, addressing societal and scientific issues, and building a stronger business and innovation economy. The group will also engage with stakeholders about the future of this advanced technology and examine how it’s rolled out in a responsible manner. The initiative will be housed under SVLG’s Technology and Innovation Center of Expertise (COE), one of three new COEs announced by the organization last month.

“Understanding AI’s value and impact is a critical first step towards ensuring this technology is developed and implemented in a responsible and ethical way that benefits members of society and is inclusive,” said Ahmad Thomas, CEO of SVLG. “We look forward to convening leading voices on this important topic to guide the use of this far-reaching technology.”

Over the coming months, the working group will hold a series of meetings to create resources that demystify AI, show its value, and advance its responsible use. The group is also seeking input from stakeholders across the tech industry, including AI developers, policymakers, representatives from civil technology organizations, leading universities, and other third parties. Interested parties are encouraged to reach out to SVLG.

“AI is incredibly profound technology that’s helping people, businesses and communities unlock their potential, said Javier González, Google’s Head of Government Affairs, Public Policy, & External Relations for California. I’m excited to co-chair SVLG’s Working Group on Responsible AI to help policy makers ensure AI is safe and useful and that we’re responsibly bringing this technology to our community.

SVLG will convene the first meeting of the working group on Thursday, May 25. Members interested in joining the working group or outside experts looking to share expertise should reach out to SVLG’s General Counsel and SVP Peter Leroe-Muñoz at pleroemunoz@svlg.org
