SAN JOSÉ, CA (January 10, 2022) —Ahmad Thomas, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, issued the following statement today in response to the release of Governor Newsom’s proposed budget for FY 2022-23:“As California enters the third year of an unprecedented global pandemic, we thank Governor Newsom for proposing a budget designed to tackle existing challenges and provide a strong framework for growth and renewal.Silicon Valley remains the best place on Earth for innovation, yet our region’s value proposition is vulnerable to the challenges of the pandemic, shifting dynamics tied to a remote or hybrid workforce, climate impacts, and the ever-rising cost of living. Our record-breaking budget surplus makes this an ideal time to fuel growth by investing in our state and enacting policies that safeguard our innovation infrastructure, providing an opportunity to create shared value for all Californians. It remains vital that we focus on ensuring our state remains a competitive place to do business. We strongly support the Governor’s proposal to restore the critical business tax credits and net operating loss deductions that were previously suspended and capped under AB 85 (2020).Much work remains to be done as the problems that face our state are complex and solutions must be ambitious. SVLG’s outstanding budget and policy priorities go to the heart of improving the economic and quality of life of not just our region, but all of California. To this end, SVLG and its world-leading member companies are poised to work with the Governor in order to lay a strong foundation for the future, one that increases equity and earnestly addresses the challenges that face our state.”
San Jose, CA (Oct. 12, 2021) — As Washington continues to negotiate a federal package, Silicon Valley Leadership Group recognized California’s bold action in prioritizing climate infrastructure investments with the weekend signing of AB 970 by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The new law, authored by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, spurs development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure by streamlining local permitting requirements. SVLG CEO Ahmad Thomas pointed to the move as one that accelerates the transition to electric vehicles by both enhancing California’s business ecosystem as well as helping to meet the state’s ambitious climate goals.
San José, CA (Oct. 5, 2021) — “With the rise of remote work, greater online learning, and increased telehealth, the current pandemic has underscored the need for the accelerated deployment of high speed internet projects to residents and businesses in California. By signing AB 537 — authored by Assemblymember Bill Quirk — into law, Governor Newsom is helping California to more swiftly pursue broadband projects that are needed to conduct the business and affairs of state residents, while providing the digital infrastructure to support the Golden State’s innovation economy. SVLG remains committed to supporting legislation like AB 537 in order to help mitigate the growing digital divide too often experienced by low-income and minority communities in the Valley and across California.”
San José, CA (September 30, 2021) — “Today Governor Newsom signed an important measure into law, sponsored by Senator Steven Bradford, which will help make our communities safer by establishing a new Peace Officer Standards Division to build accountability for California’s law enforcement officers. By addressing both systemic police violence and unjust policing, I truly believe that SB 2 represents a critical step forward in creating a more racially just and equitable future for Silicon Valley and all Californians.”
San José, CA (September 23, 2021) — “As one of the first business groups to prioritize aggressively fighting climate change, SVLG applauds the leadership of Governor Newsom today to make the largest investment in state history to address its impacts and protect our communities. We need innovative solutions and bold action now, if we are going to secure California’s innovation ecosystem and protect our communities against worsening wildfires, rising sea levels and more severe periods of drought. That action came today and we are delighted that the Governor signed SB 1 as part of his climate package, a critical tool to fortify against sea level rise here in the Bay Area. We also applaud the Newsom Administration’s historic $3.9 billion investment in Zero Emissions Vehicles and infrastructure to transform the market and put us on the path to meeting the state’s goal of all new electric car sales by 2035. These investments are a strong step towards ensuring California and our economy are resilient as we confront the climate crisis.”
