Roundtable with Councilmember David Cohen

On Wednesday, September 8th, from 11:00am – 12:00pm PST, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group will virtually host San Jose City Councilmember, David Cohen. We will have a moderated conversation led by our very own, Vince Rocha, Senior Director, Housing & Community Development!

Councilmember Cohen represents District 4 which includes North San Jose, Berryessa, and Alviso and is home to many of San Jose’s largest employers. North San Jose is also home to the recently opened Berryessa BART Station and is slated for the development of thousands of new homes in the area.

Councilmember Cohen has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley and has spent 21 years as an Engineer He holds 10 patents and in public life spent 14 years as a member of the Berryessa School Board, where he focused on building strong relationships with local families, teachers, staff and students. David also served for 6 years on the San Jose Library Commission, where he advocated for longer library hours and helped open new library branches through the city bond measure. He has been actively involved as a liaison tothe San Jose State Department of Chemical Engineering and as a Judge in the Annual Synopsis Science Fair. David is a Senior Fellow of American Leadership Forum and is a member of San Jose Downtown Rotary. David received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. He lives in Berryessa with his wife and two children, along with 2 dogs and 2 cats.

David Cohen

Councilmember, City of San Jose District 4

David Cohen has lived in District 4 in San Jose since 1998, where he has raised his family, worked in high tech, and served the community. He has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley and has spent 21 years as an Engineer and Manager in Silicon Valley. He holds 10 patents and numerous publications. Prior to moving to Silicon Valley, he worked as a Process Development Engineer at Clorox.

David spent 14 years as a member of the Berryessa School Board, where he focused on building strong relationships with local families, teachers, staff and students. He helped the district weather a protracted recession and focused on making sure students have access to technology, mental health services, and educational resources they need to be successful. Among his many accomplishments on the Board, David helped the district start a dual-immersion Mandarin program, protected class sizes, preserved music and science programs, retained counselors and added social workers to each school site, moved schools to solar energy and away from styrofoam lunch trays, and secured additional dollars for the local schools through leadership on numerous ballot measures.

David also served for 6 years on the San Jose Library Commission, where he advocated for longer library hours and helped open new library branches through the city bond measure. He has been actively involved as a liaison to the San Jose State Department of Chemical Engineering and as a Judge in the Annual Synopsis Science Fair.
