EVENT DESCRIPTION

Inspired by Marian Wright Edelman’s assertion “You can’t be what you can’t see,” the Silicon Valley Leadership Group regularly holds The Young Women’s and Young Men’s Leadership Summits to help empower young girls and boys from local under-resourced schools. These events are opportunities for adults from local companies and non-profit organizations to interact with students, with the goal to expose and engage students in careers and career planning, mentoring, and the importance of a robust education in science and technology.

The 2018 Young Men’s Summit at Santa Clara University this December will bring together 200 middle school boys and 100 male executives and STEM experts around a series of TED-style talks and interactive STEM sessions.

This year’s speakers include:

Steve Frick, Former NASA Astronaut, Director of Operations at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center

Stephen Frick is the Director of Operations at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company Advanced Technology Center (ATC), responsible for ensuring the efficient execution of research and engineering programs, and developing new opportunities for the technological innovation needed to provide Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company with future discriminating capabilities. Mr. Frick joined Lockheed Martin after a nineteen-year career as a NASA Astronaut. He has flown two space missions on the Shuttle Atlantis, as pilot on mission STS-110 in 2002 and mission commander on STS-122, for a total of over 565 hours in space. Other key positions in support of human spaceflight included Astronaut Office Exploration Branch Chief, Orion Program Flight Crew Testing Lead, and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School Smith/McCool NASA Chair Professor. A 1986 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served as a naval aviator, strike fighter pilot, and test pilot retiring as a Captain in 2010. He has logged more than 4,300 flight hours in 38 different aircraft, including 26 combat missions and over 370 carrier landings. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Soulaiman Itani, Co-Founder of Atheer, Augmented Reality

Soulaiman works at Google and is the board member and advisor for multiple high tech companies. He started Atheer, Inc, and built it into a leader in the AR space. In the process, he developed award-winning products and the Machine Learning technology that went into making them successful, signed multi-million dollar deals with F500 companies, and built a world class team. Before that, as a post doc at UC Berkeley and through his PhD at MIT, Soulaiman worked on Machine Learning for cancer research and treatments, Brain-Machine control for exoskeletons, creating microclimates through controlling the structure of the environment, and control systems for drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Jose Orozco Acosta, Senior Software Engineer, Insikt

Jose Valente Orozco Acosta is a Software Engineer living his dream in San Francisco. He was born in Morelia Michoacan in Mexico, and was raised in California as a campesino (farmworker) in the Northern Valley. He is among the many Dreamers in the U.S. who are looking for ways to give back and make our nation stronger. After graduating from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, he was hired by Insikt to be one of the company’s first engineers. Among his accomplishments at Insikt – he helped launch and release a new loan originations platform. Jose is thrilled to be contributing to work that is helping thousands of borrowers establish a credit history and borrow money to deal with life’s emergencies. He is excited to be surrounded by inspiring and motivated people who help folks like his parents and neighbors be part of the our country’s financial mainstream.

Jena Brentano, Co-founder, Chief Product Officer at Tiny Farms Inc.

Jena Brentano grew up in Maine and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. After managing the business of a sculptor in Los Angeles, Jena taught herself front-end web development and launched a boutique web design firm. In 2012, Jena co-founded Tiny Farms and began growing and eating bugs. Jena was sold on insects when she learned about their resource efficiency and nutritional profile. She was moved to start Tiny Farms because of the exciting challenges of creating a new and impactful industry, and in particular has enjoyed focusing on the challenges of commercial cricket rearing. She currently leads habitat and farm ops design at Tiny Farms.

Andrew Skidmore, Ag Tech & Automation

Growing up in the Central Valley of California, Andrew Skidmore quickly learned that there is a home for everyone in agriculture. Coming from a blue collar family, he spent his childhood raising livestock and competing in team sports, which led to important lessons in responsibility, hard work, determination, and perspective. While in middle school, he became fascinated with engineering and participated in the Future City Competition. After transitioning to high school, Andrew became heavily involved within the FFA organization. He has won numerous statewide awards in agriculture mechanics, marketing plan, and parliamentary procedure, showed cattle, horses, goats, chickens, and dogs and served in local, sectional, and regional leadership roles. He was also a varsity tennis athlete, band section leader and vice president, and a senior class officer. After graduating in the top of his class, he took a gap year to serve as the California State FFA President for it’s over 88,000 members. Upon retirement, he attended Modesto Junior College, completing his collegiate general education requirements in two semesters. He currently studies Mechanical Engineering at Fresno State and works for PG&E and Modesto Junior College to pay for his education. He believes in the future of agriculture and the power to forge innovative, creative solutions through entrepreneurship. He loves travelling, doing anything outdoors, and learning about new businesses.

2015 Young Men's Leadership Summit

The 2015 Young Men’s Summit at AT&T park brought together 100 middle school students and 80 male mentors around a series of interactive sessions focused on drawing the students towards STEM careers. The Summit provides young men with the opportunity to meet influential male leaders, many of whom have been successful in overcoming adversity in their own lives. Past speakers have included Ken McNeeley, Willie Brown, Ron Gonzales and Ronnie Lott.
