Dear Governor Brown and Members of the Legislature:
On behalf of the 400 members of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, we are writing to offer our strong support for SB 1 (Beall) to help address the road repair, traffic congestion and transit alternative needs of our state.
Please find below nearly 100 of our Member Companies who have responded in just 24 hours to reiterate our support for this proposal.
By way of background, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group has long championed policies and campaigns to fund transportation improvements in our region and state. In fact, the Leadership Group led the first countywide transportation sales tax measure for specific improvements back in 1984 in Santa Clara County, which launched the “Self-Help Counties” movement. The Leadership Group has led several successful renewal efforts in Santa Clara County in 1996, 2000, 2008 and again last November, 2016. Last November, the Leadership Group also co-led the successful transportation sales tax campaign in Santa Cruz County.
As successful as these local countywide measures have been, it underscores the need for a strong partner at the state level.
For the past two years, it has been our pleasure to work with Senate Transportation & Housing Committee Chairman Jim Beall, Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman Jim Frazier, the office of Governor Brown, along with Senate Transportation & Housing Committee Vice Chairman Anthony Canella and (most recently) the new Vice Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee Vince Fong. We believe that SB 1, recently amended to capture the best components of three different thoughtful proposals, provides a balanced combination of greatly needed revenue, along with necessary reforms, to well serve the citizens of our state.
The need for SB 1 may be obvious to some, but bears repeating:
* It has been 23 years since the last gas tax increase in California. During that time, the gas tax has lost half of its buying power.
* Each year, California needs to invest roughly $8 billion just to adequately maintain the crumbling conditions of our 50,000 miles of state highways, but we only have $2.2 billion annually to invest.
* California motorists waste, on average, well over $700 per person, per year, due to the deteriorating conditions of our roads – paying increased costs due to poor gas mileage on poor road conditions along with the increased wear and tear on our vehicles.
For these reasons and more, the nearly 400 members of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, who’s members provide more than 500,000 jobs throughout California, urge the Legislature to pass SB 1 as expeditiously as possible.
Californians are trapped in gridlock due to our inadequate transportation system. We urge Sacramento to break through any legislative gridlock to provide necessary relief.
