We hope to see you there!

Omar Din – City Councilmember at City of Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale has shaped the person I am today. My parents immigrated from Pakistan in 1983. My father’s first job was working the night shift at a motel in San Jose, while studying for his dental board exam during the day. After this my family settled in Sunnyvale where my father currently serves the community and has his own dental practice while my mother runs her own business, a daycare. Throughout my childhood my parents not only reinforced the value of hard work, given they both were small business owners, but also the necessity of civic engagement. I spent my weekends volunteering at community centers and local nonprofits, and it was in these experiences that I built a deep relationship with my city.

My first exposure to politics was going with my siblings to protest the Iraq War. Throughout my upbringing my family would never shy away from politics and the belief that the most patriotic thing a person could do was fight to make government better. This ethos stayed with me as I went to De Anza Community College where I managed a student budget of $1.2 million. It was also then that I was appointed one of the youngest commissioners in Sunnyvale city history to the Parks and Recreations Commission. I completed my degree in public policy at Cornell University. I intend to use the knowledge I gained from those experiences, and from working for Assemblymember Evan Low and Congressmember Mike Honda, for the City of Sunnyvale.
